The new platforms
Limner on macOS. A native, signed and notarized Mac app with real Mac menus, Cmd shortcuts, full Retina resolution and tablet pressure and tilt.
Limner on iPad. The whole app on the screen you draw on, with documents that are ordinary files: open one from Files or iCloud Drive and Limner edits and saves it where it lives.
Apple Pencil, with your hand on the glass. Only the Pencil paints, so a resting palm never marks the canvas, and pressure stays smooth from the first contact to the last.
Fingers do the other things. One finger works the interface or, held on the artwork, picks a color, and two fingers pan, zoom and rotate the canvas.
Or let your fingers paint. Edit > Preferences > Finger Painting lets one finger drive the active tool, while two fingers still navigate and the Pencil always wins.
Press and hold to reorder layers. Hold a layer row on iPad to lift it, then drop it into a new place or into a folder.
A timelapse straight to Photos. Finishing a timelapse on iPad offers Save to Photos or Save to Files, and the video is already safely written before you choose.
A tool bar that fits the iPad. The tool options show the richest layout that fits the screen, with Undo and Redo always in reach.
Name your work on iPad. Save As now asks for a name, warns before replacing a file and can hand a copy straight to Files.
Reach any tool in one gesture. Hold a tool group on iPad, slide onto the tool you want and lift.
Every timelapse export option on iPad. Faster, Fit to time, the 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 crops, Hold last frame and the watermark now work on iPad as they do on the desktop.
The Vector workspace
A workspace built the way Illustrator is built. Vector mode has its own menus and standard shortcuts, a Properties panel that follows your selection, a Layers panel that lists every object, and a tool strip in Illustrator's order.
Tools you know by name. Curvature, Zoom, Rotate, Scale, Reflect, Artboard, Width, Style Picker and Object Lasso tools arrive, and the Pencil can redraw part of a selected path.
The canvas talks back. Pen cursor badges, named snap points, live size and angle readouts and hover highlights show what will happen before you click.
Text that is real text. The Type tool sets point text, area text that reflows and text on a path, edited right on the canvas with full OpenType shaping for ligatures and right-to-left scripts.
Symbols, clones, patterns and shared gradients. Store artwork once and reuse it as symbols, live clones or pattern fills, and link many objects to one named gradient that restyles them all.
Strokes with character. Strokes can taper with width profiles, carry arrowheads and custom dashes, align inside or outside, and stack up to 128 fills and strokes per object, saved as reusable graphic styles.
Shapes that stay live. Corners can be Round, Chamfer or Inverted, ellipses open into arcs and slices, and a Spiral joins the shapes.
Anchors and paths under control. Set anchor types, align, join and transform selected anchors together, simplify paths, keep holes through Pathfinder, and snap to anchors, guides, the grid and object edges.
Vector masks and groups that composite. Clip groups can mask by luminance or alpha, and a group can carry its own opacity and blend mode so overlapping translucent shapes no longer double-darken.
Blends, mesh gradients, envelopes, perspective and live effects. Object > Advanced Authoring adds blends between paths, mesh gradients, envelope and four-corner distortion, and live Wave, Twist, Roughen and Transform Copies effects, all editable until you expand them.
Artboards and export sets. Draw and name artboards, then export the document, a selection or any artboard as PNG or SVG at 0.1x to 8x in one background batch.
Rulers, guides and the page. Ctrl+R shows rulers, guides drag out of them and every tool snaps to them, and a Vector document's page color is now a document setting rather than a Paper layer.
SVG in both directions. SVG files open with their groups, gradients and Inkscape layers, and SVG export now writes the whole document.
Turn any image into vector art. Layer > Vectorize Layer (a Limner Plus feature) traces a raster layer into clean, editable color or black-and-white vector shapes, with a live preview.
Everywhere
See how it will print, before you print it. View > Proofing > Soft Proof (Ctrl+Y) previews your art through a real press profile without changing a single pixel.
Choose the press from the menu. View > Proofing > Proof Setup picks a bundled or installed CMYK profile, or loads one from your print provider.
Hand your printer a press-ready file. CMYK TIFF export converts through your chosen press profile and embeds it, so the print matches the proof.
The CMYK sliders tell the truth. With a press profile chosen, the Color panel's CMYK sliders show real ink percentages for that press.
The Home screen. Limner opens to your recent works with real previews, plus quick starts for common canvases, New Book and Open File.
Previews everywhere. Every open and save captures a small local preview, and older works fill theirs in over the next few launches.
Tidy your list. Right-click a recent work to open it, show it in its folder or remove it, and missing files are marked.
Yours to turn off. Switching off Show Home Screen on Startup, on the Home screen or in Preferences, restores the classic launch.
Text that wraps. Drag out a box with the Text tool and your text wraps inside it and reflows when you resize it.
Text outline. Text layers can carry an outline with its own color and thickness, the standard look for dialogue over art.
Type that changes mid-sentence. Characters inside one text layer can take their own size, color, weight and slant.
Fonts fall back per character. A character the chosen font cannot draw comes from a font that can, instead of showing as a box.
Image Size. Resample the whole document, layers, masks and selections included, and change its DPI after creation.
Export at Size. PNG and JPEG export can write at a chosen pixel size without resizing the document.
Copy and paste that leaves the app. Copy and paste now work with the system clipboard, to and from other programs.
Animated PNG export. Animations export as APNG, with full color and real transparency.
Live adjustment layers from Photoshop. PSD adjustment layers now import as live, editable adjustments.
Reference images rotate. Reference board images rotate in 90 degree steps, saved with the document and never exported.
A Halftone filter, for print-style dot shading.
A foreground and background color pair. X swaps them and D resets to black over white, as in every other painting app.
The manual, in reach. Help > Limner Manual (F1) opens the manual, and Help > Search the Manual jumps straight to a topic.
A webtoon workflow that slices. Webtoon slicing is an explicit export option, and the webtoon preset is a tall 800 x 12800 episode canvas.
Book pages with names and their own setup. Rename any page, and give a page its own setup when it needs to differ from the Book.
Transform by the numbers. Free Transform gains numeric fields, Shift to constrain and angle snapping.
Reselect and Selection from Layer. Bring back the selection you just dropped, or select exactly a layer's pixels.
Bigger canvases, print DPI. Canvases reach 16384 px per side, with a memory warning, and DPI reaches 1200.
A smoother first session. A starter palette, remembered Fill and Text defaults, a UI scale preference and a dismissible first-run card make the first session easier.
Under the pen
Pen pressure calibration, per tablet. Edit > Preferences > Pen Pressure fits a response curve to your own scribble and keeps a separate profile for each tablet.
Spacing that follows the nib. Optional automatic spacing scales with brush size, and flat nibs no longer break into ticks.
A stabilizer that can hold still. A delay radius removes tremor and stops the line dead where you stop, and Tail Aggressiveness keeps a flick's point.
Clone Stamp and Heal. A new Retouch slot holds both: Alt+click sets the source, Clone copies it exactly and Heal blends it into the surrounding tone.
Quick Mask. Select > Quick Mask turns the selection into a red overlay you paint and erase with any brush.
Enclose and Fill. Edit > Enclose and Fill fills every region fully inside the selection with the foreground color, cleaning up flats in one step.
A paint bucket that matches color the way your eye does. Fill and the Magic Wand compare colors perceptually, blend into anti-aliased line art without a fringe and gain a Sample Size control.
Color picking, remembered. The Eyedropper gains a sampling radius and Sample all layers, the Color panel remembers recent colors, and palettes can import GIMP .gpl files.
A Curve tool. The Shape flyout gains a Curve tool: drag a line, then bend it by handles that sit on the curve itself.
More blend modes. Dissolve, Grain Merge, Grain Extract and Hard Mix (Soft) join the blend modes, and Krita keeps them in OpenRaster files.
A pin for any tool. Pin any tool in a flyout to give it its own key on the tool strip.
Layers, masks and filters
Folder masks. A folder can carry its own mask, applied to everything inside it as in Photoshop, and it travels to and from PSD.
Live Gaussian Blur layers. Gaussian Blur is now an editable adjustment layer that blurs everything beneath it.
Rotate the canvas without resampling. Image > Rotate Canvas turns or flips the whole document by exact pixels, animation included.
The filters line art was missing. Color to Alpha, Median, Lens Blur, Motion Blur, Emboss and Edge Detect arrive in a regrouped Filter menu, and Levels gains Auto.
Masks, paths and selections connect. Load a mask or a vector mask path as a selection, fill a selection with the foreground color (Ctrl+comma), or turn a selection into a vector mask.
Layer effects you can add, and more of them from Photoshop. Layer > Layer Effects adds live drop shadows, glows, overlays, strokes and bevels at Photoshop's defaults, and they read and write PSD in Photoshop's own order.
Adjustment layers that work on shape, not only tone. Motion Blur, Sharpen and Median join the live adjustment layers.
Clone layers. A raster layer can be a live clone of another at an offset, repainting itself as you paint the source.
Transforms you can go back into. A transform or warp can stay live on the layer, so you can reopen and adjust it later.
Rasterize a vector layer. Layer > Rasterize > Rasterize Layer turns a vector layer into pixels in one undo step, outside Animation.
Colorize. Drop color hints inside line art and Limner fills the flats between the lines, re-solving whenever you change a hint or a line.
Your language
Limner starts speaking five languages. Choose English, German, Japanese, French or Spanish in Edit > Preferences > Language; the menus, tools and Layers panel come first, and more of the interface follows in later builds.
Animation
An audio track. Load a WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, M4A or AAC file to see its waveform on the Timeline, trim it, set its volume and export it with your animation.
Every animated property on its own curve. Position, scale, rotation, opacity and the camera each get their own keys and easing, shown in a new Graph editor.
Layers that follow other layers. Parent one layer to another, like a hand to an arm, and it rides the parent's movement, up to eight levels deep.
Adjustment layers in animation. Adjustment layers work while animating, and six of them can be keyed, so a fade or a color shift takes a few keys.
Timing tools. Retime a run of drawings in one command, pin a key pose as an onion marker, and line up ghosts with Shift and Trace.
Playback you can trust. Every-frame playback never skips a drawing, and real-time playback shows its actual frame rate and dropped frames.
An Export dialog. The Timeline's Export button opens one clear dialog for format, frames, size and range, with a summary before you export.
Timeline thumbnails you can read. The Timeline's gear menu sets thumbnails to Small, Medium or Large, and exposure counts sit in a readable pill.
Ghost the previous key. A third onion marker ghosts the layer's last keyed pose, and onion ghosts now follow each layer's transform keys.
Scrub a value from its name. In the Layer Keyframes and Camera popovers, drag a label to change its value, with Shift and Alt for coarse and fine steps.
Set a value, get a key. Editing a value on a frame without a key adds the key for you, in the same undo step.
Export controls, and frames to Photoshop. Export every frame or every 2nd to 4th, at 10% to 400% size, and send a multi-frame animation to PSD as one layer per frame.
Files
Documents that survive damage. A corrupt byte now costs at most one layer instead of the whole file, and every save and export is checked before Limner reports success.
Export tells you what it cannot carry, before it writes. Exporting to SVG, PSD or OpenRaster first lists anything the format cannot keep, with Continue and Cancel.
OpenRaster opens and saves. The layered format GIMP, Krita and MyPaint share opens and saves with layers, folders and blend modes.
Photoshop documents round-trip. Text layers, layer effects and vector masks write back to PSD as live Photoshop records, and Pattern Fill layers and Smart Objects import intact.
Every kind of PSD opens. PSB, 32-bit, 16-bit, grayscale, bitmap, indexed, CMYK, Lab, duotone and multichannel files all open, up to 16384 px per side.
PDF export. Documents export as PDF with vectors kept as vectors, and a Book exports as a multipage PDF with trim and bleed.
HEIC, HEIF and AVIF open. Phone photos in these formats open as documents with their color profile and orientation applied, on Windows through the Microsoft Store codec extensions.
Video exports carry their sound. MP4 exports embed the animation's audio as AAC, or write it as a separate WAV if you prefer.
Improved
One look for every slider, and a tool-options bar that fits. Every value control shares one captioned design, and the tool-options bar tucks overflow into a "More" menu instead of cramming.
The Timeline carries its own rows. Turning on the Filmstrip, Camera, Audio or Graph rows grows the Timeline to fit instead of pushing layer rows out of view.
The row you are drawing on stays in view. The Timeline scrolls to the active layer's row when you change layers.
A parented layer's row names its parent. The parent's name now appears beside the link icon.
The Timeline opens at a working height. It starts 300 px tall, showing the ruler and several layers right away.
Onion skin steps out of the way during playback. Ghosts hide while the animation plays and return when you pause.
Reordering a frame column keeps every frame's drawing. Moving a frame column no longer leaves blank frames behind.
Pasting frames keeps your holds. Pasted frames keep the timing you copied instead of becoming a key on every frame.
Export says why it is unavailable. Animation exports are disabled while an export runs, with the reason on hover.
A loading audio track says it is loading. The audio row reads "Decoding" until the sound is ready.
The Parent picker offers only layers that can move. The paper layer is no longer offered as a parent.
The menus sit where your hands expect them. File, Edit, Select and Layer follow the order Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint users know.
The Brush panels follow the tool. Picking Brush, Pen or Pencil brings up that tool's brush family and the brush you last used with it.
Liquefy is a brush now, not a mode you enter. Push, Pinch, Expand and Twirl are tools you simply draw with, one undo per stroke and no confirm step.
The Blend brushes were rebuilt around pigment. A blender now carries a limited amount of the color it picks up, so a smear runs out the way real paint does.
A blender pulls paint inward, not only outward. Dragging a blender into a filled shape now pulls its edge back, the way a real blender lifts paint.
Smudge no longer stalls on a large canvas. A smudge stroke now starts instantly even at 4K and above, with the pause on an iPad Air down from about 45 ms to under 2 ms.
Smudge samples a real area. Smudge picks up color from an area you set, so the smear no longer flickers on textured paint.
Brush strokes are cleaner at every size. Small brushes stop pulsing, flat nibs have clean edges and fast curves no longer facet.
Lifting the pen never freezes the app. A long or heavy stroke finishes in the background while you keep working.
Truer color on screen. Layers blend in 16-bit float with dithering, so gradients no longer band.
Selections with their soft edges kept. Feathered selections keep their exact soft edges through adding, subtracting and transforms.
Levels and Curves. Levels gains per-channel Auto, and the Curves histogram follows the channel you are editing.
Undo holds more. Deleted layers and small selection edits take far less undo memory, so your last strokes stay in history on large canvases.
Undo back to the saved state reads clean. Undoing every change since your last save lets you close without a prompt.
Text set here matches text set elsewhere. Kerning and line spacing now follow the font's own data, matching browsers, InDesign and Krita.
Vectorize Layer never freezes the window. Tracing runs in the background, with Cancel.
Vector editing stays quick on a big canvas. Picking, erasing and dragging dense artwork redraw only what changed.
Vector panels in a narrow dock. Panels, tabs and the tool-options bar stay readable in a narrow dock, and the zoom readout shows the true magnification.
PSD export scales to real projects. Large multi-layer documents now export to PSD instead of being refused.
The command palette covers the app. Nearly every command is searchable and favoritable from the palette, and Ctrl+N creates a new document.
Workspaces cycle. Ctrl+Shift+M cycles Illustration, Vector and Animation.
Calmer marching ants. The selection outline animates more slowly and no longer speeds up with zoom.
Honest gates and honest names. Plus gates say what they gate, Binarize is now Threshold, and messages appear in a status area that also reports a previous crash.
File > Open explains itself. A file that cannot open is refused with the real reason, and an image is pointed to its import route.
Photoshop interchange details. Gradient Map layers from current Photoshop import correctly, and an unreadable PSD is refused with a reason.
Merge Visible has a place of its own. The Merge button is Merge Down, and Merge Visible moved to Panel Options, the Layer menu and the command palette.
Color Balance adjustment layers no longer offer Preserve lightness. The live layer cannot represent it, so the option is gone there but stays in the destructive filter.
Grayed-out rows say why. Every unavailable menu row explains itself on hover.
The Mac menu bar knows what it can do. Menu bar commands gray out when they cannot act.
Every shared panel in the Vector workspace. Navigator, Stats, Timelapse and Tool Settings now open from the Vector Window menu.
Recovery on the way out, on iPad. Leaving Limner on iPad takes an immediate recovery snapshot and saves your settings and Recent list.
Signing out keeps your work, on Windows. Signing out, restarting or shutting down Windows saves a recovery copy of unsaved work and offers it back on the next start.
Shape Builder stays smooth. Hovering over many overlapping shapes no longer slows it down.
The Windows installer states Windows 10 or later.
Fixed
Files opened from Explorer wait their turn. A file opened while a dialog or prompt is up now opens once it closes, instead of being lost.
Any file name Windows allows opens in a running Limner. Unusual file names no longer fail to open when Limner is already running.
iPad text draws every character. Missing-glyph boxes in a few menus and panels are gone.
Layer merges preserve their appearance. Merge and flatten keep opacity, folder masks and the page color as the canvas shows them.
Rapid paint-bucket clicks are retained. Quick successive fills are applied in order.
iPad updates preserve recent-file links. Recent files still open after an app update moves Limner's data folder, and the desktop Exit command is no longer offered on iPad.
Preview and workspace transitions settle correctly. Tool, preset, document and workspace switches got another reliability pass.
The Timeline popovers stay open while you use them. Clicking inside a Timeline popover no longer closes it, so typed keyframe values finally work.
Confirming a dialog with Enter no longer starts playback. Pressing Enter to close a dialog in Animation no longer toggles playback.
Filmstrip and cel thumbnails finish building. Thumbnails no longer stall half-drawn when the app is idle.
A new animation starts with a layer to draw on. New animations open with Layer 1 above the paper, so the first stroke no longer lands on the paper.
A brisk drag grabs the key you aimed at. A quick drag in the Graph editor or dope sheet now catches the key under the pointer.
A Limner GIF re-imports at the rate it was written. A 12 fps GIF from Limner comes back at 12 fps.
Comic panels now reach every export. Panel borders, gutters and fills now appear in exports and thumbnails, not just on screen.
Resize and crop keep your layers whole. Resizing or cropping no longer resets layer locks, clipping and labels or drops a vector layer's objects.
Blenders no longer deposit paint. Wet Mix, Perceptual Wet Mix and Palette Knife now only move color around instead of laying new color down.
A blender no longer carries color into the next stroke. Picked-up color is cleared when a stroke ends.
Your Blend brush comes back after a restart. Reopening in a Smudge session restores your blender instead of Pencil (HB).
Rotated selections show dotted edges. The marching ants on a rotated selection no longer draw as a solid line.
Painting on a transparency-locked layer holds its alpha. The lock now keeps every pixel's transparency exactly, for painting and erasing alike.
Gray and feathered masks display as they bake. A partly gray mask now looks the same on screen as after Apply Mask.
Color Dodge and Color Burn at their extremes. A white Color Dodge over black stays black, and a black Color Burn over white stays white.
Enclose and Fill no longer refuses large enclosures. Large enclosures now fill instead of being refused.
A vector object's own blend mode renders. Vector objects and groups now draw with their blend mode instead of Normal.
Gradients follow the object's transform exactly. Gradients on stretched or sheared objects now distort with the object.
Six Vector tool fixes. Corner rings no longer hide anchors, undo keeps the selection, the first Gradient click shows a visible ramp, the Eraser cuts stroke-only paths, dialogs open in front, and duplicates get their own names.
Text edits and text layers. Ctrl+Enter reliably finishes a text edit, missing characters show a box, and transforming a text and a raster layer together no longer erases the text.
Rulers. Picking a ruler tool no longer marks the document changed, and ruler undo and resize bugs are fixed.
Documents that used to be refused now open. Documents with oversized saved selections or deleted keyed layers now open with a warning instead of being refused.
Photoshop files. A batch of PSD import fixes covers saved selections, 16-bit layers, line breaks, masked groups and Smart Object undo.
Exports. Exact black and white survive dithering, and OpenRaster and PNG sequence exports no longer fail in edge cases.
Animation frames and undo. Undoing a stroke now returns it to the frame it was painted on.
Autosave keeps running when it cannot take its lock. Autosave now works on network and roaming home folders.
Pens the system cannot name. Calibrating an unnamed pen no longer overwrites another tablet's profile.
Flipping a rotated view mirrors what you see. A flip on a rotated view now flips the picture the way it looks.
iPad. Vector handles are easier to grab, finger editing works with Mesh Warp and transforms, and image sequence import and export work through Files.
The crash reporter respects your settings. Writing a crash report no longer overwrites your settings file.
SVG export keeps clipping. Clip groups now export correctly.
Text layers stay text. Transforming a text layer is refused with an explanation instead of silently making it uneditable.
The grid stays put. The grid overlay no longer drifts from the artwork at some zooms.
Warnings you can actually see. Warnings about altered artwork now appear in the app instead of a hidden console.
Comic panels keep clipping all session. Panels no longer stop clipping on screen after switching documents.
The crash notice waits its turn. The "previous run ended unexpectedly" notice now waits until you can see it.
Saved Books open again from everywhere. Books open from the Home screen or by double-clicking the file even when Animation was the last workspace.
No more scary first-save note. An outdated warning on the first save is gone.
A layer toggle no longer blanks a transform in progress. Changing a layer during a free transform no longer makes its content look deleted.
Held frames stay held. Editing one frame of a held drawing now changes only that frame.
A damaged Book page no longer loses the Book. A Book with one unreadable page now opens with that page blank, as an unsaved copy.
Duplicate Page works on heavy pages. Pages with very large undo histories can now be duplicated.
The Book screen behaves. Book screen buttons, page switching and Panel tool edits behave, and panel outlines draw in the right place on Retina and iPad.
The hidden page stays untouched. Commands that would change a hidden document are grayed out in the Page Manager and on the Home screen.
Clipped layers respect the base's mask. A layer clipped to a masked layer now shows only where the base shows, as in Photoshop.
Adjustment layers fade the way Photoshop fades them. Adjustments at partial opacity or under soft masks now fade exactly as Photoshop's do.
Rasterize Layer on an adjustment keeps the picture. Rasterizing an adjustment layer now bakes exactly what the live layer showed, or declines with a notice.
Exports clip like the canvas. OpenRaster and SVG exports now clip layers exactly as the canvas does.
Filters respect Lock Transparency. Filters on a transparency-locked layer keep every pixel's alpha.
Filters and masks. Levels and Curves read the mask while you edit it, blur previews match the result, and filters that cannot run say why.
Masks and selections load exactly. Masks and paths load as selections in their exact shape, and painting a mask with a color uses its lightness.
Cut and Copy respect a targeted mask. With a mask targeted, Cut and Copy act on the mask instead of erasing the layer's pixels.
Transforms return to the right tool. Confirming a transform returns you to the tool you came from.
Colorize holds up. Colorize handles locked layers, deleted line layers, undo and large solves reliably.
Layer housekeeping. Smart object duplicates, stray undo steps, and undo of layer labels and locks all behave.
A slow straight stroke keeps its length. With Post correct on, a slow straight stroke no longer collapses to a dot.
Limner Plus recovers from a damaged release record. A damaged license file no longer blocks renewal or entering a key.
A deeply nested SVG is refused, not fatal. Extremely nested SVGs are refused cleanly instead of closing the iPad app.
The Vector strip's captions fit. Section captions stay on one line in French and Spanish.
And a sweep of smaller ones. Mask toggles are undoable, the Levels histogram no longer hangs, V picks Layer Move, text outlines stay exact at the canvas edge, masked folders undo correctly, the Magic Wand stays inside its selection, and Escape closes an error over a filter dialog.
Notes
The Blur brush has been retired. Use Smudge (the Blend tool) instead, or Filter > Gaussian Blur for a whole layer; saved Blur brushes load as Smudge brushes.
Document format. Every save now writes a damage-resistant format that needs 0.9.0 or later to open, while older documents open as before and are not converted until you save. Keep a copy of anything you still need to open in an older version.
Some layer stacks now render closer to Photoshop. Partial-opacity adjustments, layers clipped to masked layers and masked Pass Through folders now follow Photoshop's math, which can change how some existing documents look.
Japanese on iPad. The Japanese interface and Japanese text show as empty boxes on iPad in this release, so pick another language there for now; a bundled Japanese font is coming in a later beta.
Text you have already saved is left exactly as it was. Older text keeps its old layout, and only new or retyped text uses the new kerning and spacing.
Strokes are not pixel-identical to earlier builds. The same gesture now produces slightly different pixels, though existing artwork is untouched.
Your brushes carry over. Existing brush libraries load as they are, on all three platforms.
The same documents, everywhere. Documents (older .artpaint files included), Books, brush libraries and palettes are the same files on Windows, macOS and iPad.
Free during the beta, on all three platforms. A free beta key unlocks Plus on Windows and macOS, every feature is unlocked on iPad, and pricing will be announced before anything changes.
Where to get each one. A signed Windows installer and a notarized Mac disk image (Apple silicon and Intel) come from the site, and the iPad beta comes through Apple TestFlight.
Updating keeps your files. Updating leaves your documents, brushes, palettes, settings and Plus key untouched; update from the in-app prompt or the Help menu on the desktop, and through TestFlight on iPad.
v0.8.7July 2026
New
Pan the canvas with a tool. A Hand tool now sits on the left tool strip for moving the view, alongside the existing Space-drag and middle-mouse pan. Easier on a pen, or a tablet with no middle button.
Canvas scrollbars are on by default. New installs get horizontal and vertical scrollbars around the canvas. Existing settings are untouched, and View > Canvas scrollbars still toggles them.
Favorites stop vanishing. Quick Access entries that do not fit the bar now move into an overflow menu.
Improved
Everything fits your window. Modal dialogs cap to the window, the menu bar moves trailing menus into an overflow, the tool strip scrolls, and the status bar, tool-options bar, Layers, Color, Navigator, Reference, Timelapse, timeline, Book toolbar, and filter dialogs all gained compact layouts instead of clipping their own controls.
The Brush Settings editor was rebuilt. Values live on bar sliders you can drag anywhere along the track, with the label and number inside the bar and a double-click to type an exact value. The category rail collapses to icons when the panel is narrow.
The brush picker no longer collapses. Cells stretch to fill the pane, names shorten around the grip and trash buttons, a compact list appears at very narrow widths, and thumbnails stop being clipped at the panel edge.
Type and chrome match the design. Limner now loads the proper semibold face for headings and emphasis, which had been silently falling back to regular weight, and picks a sensible system UI font on each operating system.
Dialogs stop dulling the interface. The dimming behind a modal is now a light veil, so the canvas and the accent colour stay true while a dialog is open.
Antialiased edges look cleaner. The canvas, camera view, panel display, and live stroke preview filter in premultiplied space, so thin strokes and soft edges stop looking washed out against transparency at fit zoom.
Fixed
A refused stroke could paint on a locked layer. A click rejected on a locked, text, fill, adjustment, or keyframed layer caused the next click to replay the previous stroke onto the newly selected layer, straight through the lock, with an undo step recorded for it.
Free Transform could corrupt a keyframed layer. Transforming a layer driven by a transform keyframe altered its pixels even when cancelled, and discarded the only undo record. It is now refused with an explanation.
Eight blend modes committed as Normal. Subtract, Divide, Vivid Light, Linear Light, Pin Light, Hard Mix, Darker Color, and Lighter Color rendered correctly in the preview but not on commit.
Brush packs are no longer refused. A safeguard against malformed .abr files measured each tip at its authored size even though Limner shrinks every tip on import, so ordinary commercial packs were rejected outright, importing nothing at all.
The brush library could stop saving. One failed read of brushes.dat, even a momentary one caused by another program holding the file, stopped Limner saving any brush change for the rest of the session and made Reset silently do nothing.
A Plus key you just bought could be refused. Pasting a newly purchased key was rejected as a downgrade before activation could run, and revocation now requires a signature, so a tampered update manifest can no longer drop a paying customer to Free.
Big documents refuse gracefully instead of quitting. Free Transform on many large layers, a canvas resize on a many-layer document, an oversized Book page, and an impossible timelapse segment used to exhaust memory and end the process, losing every unsaved document. Each now explains the limit and leaves your work untouched.
A Book that Limner created could refuse to open. A page-size check meant for new Books was also applied when opening one, which made a large Book unopenable and quietly dropped it from Recent Books.
Dragging files no longer freezes the window. Hovering or dropping files from a slow or unreachable network share could lock up Limner, and the window you were dragging from, until the network timed out.
Crash recovery is safer with two copies open. Quitting one Limner no longer deletes another running copy's recovery snapshots, and a failed graphics read no longer substitutes transparent pixels into artwork.
Smaller fixes. Crop keeps a sideways shift, Cut and Copy keep a feathered edge, switching tools mid-selection is undoable, Apply Layer Mask on a disabled mask no longer erases visible pixels, opening files from Explorer is more reliable, and the Text dialog stops growing when you pick a long font name.
v0.8.6July 2026
New
Build deep, durable layer stacks. Folders now nest up to 8 levels, empty folders persist, and a selected folder can be moved or deleted with all of its contents in one undoable action.
Adjust without destroying pixels. Solid Color and Gradient fill layers plus live Levels, Curves, Brightness / Contrast, Color Balance, Posterize, Invert, Gradient Map, and Threshold layers stay editable, respect folders, clipping, opacity, and masks, and can be baked with Rasterize Layer.
Save selections for later. Named selection channels preserve hard, anti-aliased, and feathered masks inside the document and reload as Replace, Add, Subtract, or Intersect.
Reach any command faster. Ctrl+K opens the command palette with ranked search, live shortcut labels, recent commands, favorites, and a one-click Quick Access strip.
Keep layouts for each job. Named workspaces restore panel and tool-strip arrangements, while Canvas Focus hides Limner's chrome until Esc brings it back.
Reference boards now travel with each canvas. Every document saves its own board inside the .limner file, restores it on reopen, and lets each photo flip horizontally or vertically. Board editing stays disabled until a document is open.
Animate with production controls. The timeline adds filmstrip review, zoom and scrubbing, frame ranges, cel exposure and retiming, color tags, 2D camera keys, and per-layer position, scale, rotation, and opacity keys.
Bring animation in and send it out. Import animated GIFs or numbered image sequences, then export the selected range as GIF, MP4, or a PNG sequence with camera and layer motion baked in.
Improved
Folder work stays in context. Merge Down and Merge Visible now accept layers inside folders. Click Merge to merge down, or press and hold it to flatten every visible layer. Add Layer Below inserts where expected, Remove from Folder moves one level, and clicking the empty panel exits folder scope for the next layer.
Photoshop exchange keeps more structure. Layer masks and folders now round trip through PSD import and export, ZIP-compressed channels import, and malformed files are handled more defensively. PSD import remains limited to 8-bit RGB; smart objects, live adjustments, editable text, and effects do not round trip.
Generated layers protect their recipes. Pixel tools and destructive filters leave fill and adjustment bodies untouched, while masks remain paintable and Rasterize provides an explicit, undoable conversion.
Document format v28 preserves the new data. Files that use nested or empty folders, generated layers, named channels, or a saved Reference board do not open in 0.8.5. Feature-free documents keep the older compatible file shape.
Fixed
Opening the construction-aids group no longer places a stray ruler before you choose Symmetry or another aid.
A clipped layer now stays clipped throughout a move instead of briefly showing its full contents.
Stabilized strokes no longer wobble when a tablet sends unevenly spaced input samples.
Double-clicking a grouped tool now opens its flyout, while a single click continues to select the shown tool.
